Take Time For You

According to the World Health Organization, mental wellness is defined as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”  While this is a goal, ascending to it challenges many of us.  As we face the new year, we have an opportunity to start the year with a plan to work towards our mental wellness, and that may be why January is Mental Wellness Month.  To help you on this path we have listed a series of steps that you can take to improve your mental wellness. Good luck on your journey, and please share what works as part of your mental health wellness plan.

  1. Be nice to yourself
  2. Take care of your body
    1. Eat Healthily
    2. Hydrate
    3. Sleep
    4. Exercise
  3. Keep alcohol use to a minimum
  4. Avoid drugs
  5. Put the screens behind you before you go to bed
  6. Do your best to enjoy 15 minutes of sunshine every day
  7. Surround yourself with good people
  8. Volunteer to help others
  9. Dress for the social life you want
  10. Practice gratitude
  11. Learn how to deal with stress
  12. Write down ways to relax
  13. Challenge negative thoughts
  14. Find lightness and humor in every day
  15. Give everyone the benefit of the doubt
  16. Notice the good in the world
  17. Practice self-compassion
  18. Fake it, act the way you want to feel
  19. Use affirmations and reminders
  20. Unload, get help with your responsibilities
  21. Find the lesson in life as it is now
  22. Breathe deep
  23. Practice mindfulness
  24. Pray or meditate
  25. Go ahead and yawn
  26. Set realistic goals
  27. Take small steps
  28. Break up the monotony of your day-to-day
  29. Go ahead and yawn
  30. Get professional help when you need it; it is a sign of strength
